Uninstall Cisco Web Security Mac

I know I'm coming across this months later, but maybe I can shed some light for other users experiencing this same problem:

Typical uninstall: From the Finder go to the Applications folder. Look for the Cisco folder and open it; Then double click on Uninstall Anyconnect to start the uninstall process; Follow instructions to uninstall VPN program; Manual uninstall: As root, run the following shell script from the Terminal (Go to Application - Other - Terminal). If you still cannot be able to uninstall Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus for Mac, there is an much more easier alternative you can try to get rid of any unwanted app. As a lightweight yet powerful utility, Osx Uninstaller will guarantee you a clean, complete uninstallation result.

I used AppZapper to remove a copy of Cisco VPN I had installed on my system and ended up having the exact same issue as Glenn when trying to reinstall. What I did was this:

• Open Terminal and do the following:
  • su (be careful when giving yourself root, of course)
  • cd /opt/cisco/anyconnect/bin
  • ls (to see if there's a vpn_uninstall.sh file)
• If there is, then run the following command:

  sh vpn_uninstall.sh

• You'll get this confirmation message in the Terminal:

  Successfully removed Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client from the system.

Now go back to your .dmg or vpn.pkg file (whatever your source for installing is). Now when you get to the Destination part, you should get no error and you can proceed with the installation.

This issue occurs only on Macs.

If you try to install the VPN but everything is greyed out or you're getting the error 'a newer version is already installed,' this is because there is a previous installation of the Cisco Anyconnect VPN still on your machine.

First check if it is still installed:

1. From the Finder go to the Application folder.
2. Look for the 'Cisco' folder and open the folder
3. Then double click on 'Uninstall Anyconnect' start uninstall process
4. Follow instructions to uninstall VPN program
5. Reboot

You will be prompted for your password. Once you enter it, just follow the steps and reboot.

If you are still having problems, run this command from the Terminal and then reboot:

sudo pkgutil --forget com.cisco.pkg.anyconnect.vpn
