Compatible Video Cards For Unsupported Mac Pro Average ratng: 9,6/10 3035 votes

Please be aware that while the 3,1 Mac Pro has the same GPU compatibility as the 4,1 or 5,1 that the older hardware of the 3,1 will result in some comparative bottlenecking. In general I recommend the GTX 770 as the high end for the 3,1 Mac Pro. My iPad is compatible for sidecar but my MacBook Pro is a late 2013 model that is not compatible with the list. I am very disappointed that the sidecar “workaround” did not work for me. The message I got was 4796:211994 and 4797:212006 Rep argument is not a dictionary.

Unfortunately the integrated WiFi chipsets on most PC motherboards aren’t compatible with macOS, meaning that if you want working WiFi, you’ll need an additional WiFi card. Few cards are supported by macOS. In this article, we’ll take a look at a couple of the best options for working 802.11ac Wifi out of the box in macOS Catalina with no need for additional drivers.

Working cards are based on the Broadcom BCM4360 chipset, as this is the chipset Apple uses in their own native WiFi cards on real Macs, so native drivers are included in macOS Mojave and Catalina.

Note that the two WiFi cards listed are only for WiFi. If you want Bluetooth as well (needed for handoff / continuity with iOS devices), either buy the BCM94360CD card or use one of the listed PCI-E WiFi cards with an additional Bluetooth USB dongle like the Asus BT400.

For WiFi with working Airdrop

TP-Link Archer T9E 802.11AC AC1900

Works out of the box in macOS Catalina, using the Apple drivers, with working WiFi and Airdrop between macOS computers.

  • Dual band 2.4Ghz / 5Ghz
  • Works out of the box in macOS Catalina
  • Up to 1900Mbps Wi-Fi speeds (1300Mbps on 5GHz band or 600Mpbs on 2.4GHz band)
  • Backward compatibility with 802.11 a/b/g/n standards
  • Based on Broadcom BCM4360

Rosewill 802.11AC Dual Band RNX-AC1900PCE

Works out of the box in macOS X Catalina, with working WiFi and Airdrop between macOS computers.

  • Dual band 2.4Ghz / 5Ghz
  • Works out of the box in macOS Catalina
  • Up to 1900Mbps Wi-Fi speeds (1300Mbps on 5GHz band or 600Mpbs on 2.4GHz band)
  • Backward compatibility with 802.11 a/b/g/n standards
  • Based on Broadcom BCM4360

For WiFi and Bluetooth with working Airdrop / Handoff / Continuity

Broadcom BCM94360CD

This is the original Mini PCI-E Apple 802.11ac Wifi / Bluetooth card used in the late 2013 / mid 2014 iMac. You need to use a Mini PCI-E adapter and a Mini-PCI-E to PCI-E 1X adapter to use it in a PCI-E 1x slot on your motherboard. Once installed, it works out of the box using the native drivers, just as if it were a real Mac, so you get working Airdrop, and Handoff / Continuity with iOS devices. This is probably the best option if you regularly use an iPad or iPhone.

  • Original Apple part as used in iMac
  • Works out of the box in macOS Catalina
  • Features Bluetooth 4.0
  • Fully compatible with Handoff / Continuity / Airdrop between macOS and iOS devices
Hi,
I have the first generation MacPro. It came with the Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT and that just died on me.
I called someone around here I can buy from, but it's going to cost me about $550.00 through him. He'd suggested I go third party but couldn't really elaborate on what that meant.
I don't mind paying, I just want to check my options first and see if I can do better in terms of cost. Does anyone know of compatible cards I might be able to use for this machine?
Thanks for any suggestions.
