Apple delivers third-pary software for scanners and printers via Software Update. Simply connect the printer or scanner to the Mac. If software is needed and available, OS X will automatically download and install it.
This article is a comprehensive list of currently supported printer and scanner models and associated software provided by third-party vendors as of 28 June 2012.
Important: Run Software Update before connecting to a printer or scanner. This will update the Mac's database on the latest supported printer and scanner models.
To view the complete list of printers and scanners that are supplied by Software Update, see below or use the browser's Find feature to look for a specific name or model number. If you cannot find a driver for the specific model, check the list to see if a driver is available for a series of printers that may include the model. For example, a printer with the model number 5070 might use the driver for the '5000' or '5000 Series.'

This sounds like a classic case of 'wireless connectus interruptus.'
First off, you state that the printer is connected to your desktop via USB, NOT wirelessly.
The implication is that you have configured the printer to be attached to that device.
Most printers do not support multiple connection interfaces (i.e. wireless and USB) simultaneously.
One interface (wireless or USB) has to be disabled (disconnected) for the other to work.
You could try enabling the 'printer sharing' option for that printer on your desktop and simply print via your desktop.
That said, back to 'connectus interruptus' -- basically, every time you join or remove yourself from a wireless network, many values change. Sometimes they are resumed as they were, many times they are not. This is also true of a USB connection. On the surface, things look the same, but within the bowels of the OS, 'pointers' change.
Assuming you leave the printer connected to your desktop (and that it prints correctly) and that you have established (in Preferences/Print&Fax) 'printer sharing' for that device.
(Select the printer; check the box 'Share this printer on the network.' Then close preferences.)
On the Laptop after you have established your wireless connection, again open Preferences/Print&fax.
1- delete any printer you have present (one assumes it is not working)
2- create a new printer - click on the '+'
3- A new window will open showing (theoretically) the printer connected to your desktop. It should show as 'Kind' -- Bonjour.
4- select that printer.. at the bottom of the screen the 'Name and Location fields' should populate.
5- use the pulldown to select your printer driver.. it will likely have already selected 'the best' option for you so you can simply click 'add.'
You should then be good to go.
Note. If your printer DOES support both USB and wireless simultaneously, you will likely see two entries under 'printer name.' .. pick the one which works.
The next time you take your laptop to work, come home and try to print again.. it should work with no changes necessary. However if it does not simply repeat the steps again on the laptop.

Assuming you leave the printer connected to your desktop (and that it prints correctly) and that you have established (in Preferences/Print&Fax) 'printer sharing' for that device.
(Select the printer; check the box 'Share this printer on the network.' Then close preferences.)
On the Laptop after you have established your wireless connection, again open Preferences/Print&fax.
1- delete any printer you have present (one assumes it is not working)
2- create a new printer - click on the '+'
3- A new window will open showing (theoretically) the printer connected to your desktop. It should show as 'Kind' -- Bonjour.
4- select that printer.. at the bottom of the screen the 'Name and Location fields' should populate.
5- use the pulldown to select your printer driver.. it will likely have already selected 'the best' option for you so you can simply click 'add.'
You should then be good to go.
Note. If your printer DOES support both USB and wireless simultaneously, you will likely see two entries under 'printer name.' .. pick the one which works.
The next time you take your laptop to work, come home and try to print again.. it should work with no changes necessary. However if it does not simply repeat the steps again on the laptop.
First off, you state that the printer is connected to your desktop via USB, NOT wirelessly.
The implication is that you have configured the printer to be attached to that device.
Most printers do not support multiple connection interfaces (i.e. wireless and USB) simultaneously.
One interface (wireless or USB) has to be disabled (disconnected) for the other to work.
You could try enabling the 'printer sharing' option for that printer on your desktop and simply print via your desktop.
That said, back to 'connectus interruptus' -- basically, every time you join or remove yourself from a wireless network, many values change. Sometimes they are resumed as they were, many times they are not. This is also true of a USB connection. On the surface, things look the same, but within the bowels of the OS, 'pointers' change.
