I recently updated to MacOS Sierra and have not been able to make. Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 2 (12.2.0) (requires 12.1.0). Organize every 'how-to' in one place. Trainual is the one-stop-shop for your team to learn and Update Office 2008 For Mac reference every process, policy, and standard operating procedure. A comprehensive knowledge base meets powerful onboarding and training tool.

Install Office for Mac 2008 including updates

Office 2008 comes with an installer where you could previously choose to drag and drop or run the installer. The original release DVDs of Office 2008 installed 12.0.0. The newer copies of the DVD will install the 12.1.0 version of Office.

  • If you have one of the original DVDs, you will need the 12.1.0 (SP1) updater & the 12.2.6 updater.
  • If you have one of the newer DVDs that came with 12.1.0 or 12.2.0 installed, you will only need the 12.2.9 updater.
  • I try to keep this page updated, but always check for additional updaters to be sure you are fully updated.

Log out/in with Shift key down to disable any startup applications for a successful install.

The installer is an Apple package installer file. A 'package' is literally just a set of specially named folders and files. Nothing more.

You can drag your CD Key into the installer window. No more boxes to fill! Please keep your CD Key in a safe place. Should you ever need to install again, you will need your CD Key. The Product ID is used only to get Microsoft support. It's not required that you register like the Windows Office users for activation. See the Third Party Products page for links to password managers.

You will be cautioned to remove all versions of Office for Mac on your computer. It's not necessary to do this. In fact, you might need it to access your mail from the older version when Setup Assistant fails to import your data.

When the installers asks you to remove old copies, I suggest not deleting at this time. If for any reason you cannot import your Entourage mail, you will have to be able to open the old identity in order to manually move over your data. In addition, some users are keeping Office 2004 for VBA. You can run both versions of the Office applications at the same time (including Entourage) after you update.

Don't know which one to select? Hover the cursor over each listing. A balloon tip will show you the location.

The Setup Assistant will open. One of the options is to Register your software. This is not necessary. Office for Mac does not have to be activated. All this does is put you on an email list for announcements. (If you cannot click on continue, move the Microsoft User Data folder to the desktop and try the Setup Assistant again. See this page for more help)

Select Check for Updates.

Make your selection on checking for software updates. I suggest Automatically. It does not install when you make this selection. You still have the option on when to install.

Original DVDs of Office installed version 12.0.0. Current shipping DVDs will install 12.1.0 (SP1) or 12.2.0 (SP2) Because of this some of the directions below will differ.

Original DVDs came with the older VISE installer that was soon changed over to a package installer. For this reason if you are keeping Office 2004, you will need to keep the Microsoft Autoupdater (MAU) in applications. Office 2008 hides it's MAU in this location: /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0

Newer DVDs can skip updating to 12.1.0. Click here to continue.

You are already running the adobe application manager. When AutoUpdater shows up in the Dock, select to keep it in the Dock while you are installing to make it easy to access without opening your Office applications.

Select AutoUpdater from the Dock and download the SP1 (12.1.0) updater. Install and Restart. (Note a recent Apple security update will cause problems if you have any Office applications open when running the updater. )

Check this file after updating to 12.1.0 to be sure it is version 2.2.0.

/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0

Continue with the install..

Download and install any updates. IMPORTANT ...See this page for updates.

Select the AutoUpdater from the Dock and download the suggested update.

Repeat the previous step, 'select the AutoUpdater from the Dock' until there are no futher updates listed. Sony video capture software.
