KONA 3 Installation and Operation Guide — Cable Connections version 3.3 and higher of the Kona driver and can be found in the AJA Utilities folder which installs in the Applications folder of the Mac OS. Wanted: AJA Kona Drivers for Avid Media Composer: AJA Video Systems. Some satisfied Matrox users in the end of this thread linked below Jef and for low cost ebay seems to work. As a credited thought-leader in the industry, Marco has consulted for the likes of Pixar, Apple, and Google to name a few. I have different needs than a lot of people.

Press Release

AJA Video, a leading
manufacturer of professional video interface and conversion solutions,
today announced KONA 3, AJA's new top-of-the-line HD/SD video capture card.
Offering 40 percent more processing power than the industry-leading KONA 2, the
new KONA 3 is the ultimate uncompressed capture card for SD, HD and Dual
Link 4:4:4:4 HD for PCI Express (PCIe) Apple G5 Power Macs and Apple Final
Cut Pro. KONA 3 makes its worldwide debut this week during MacWorld Expo
San Francisco at the AJA booth, #1449; the new card will ship worldwide on
January 30th, 2006.
KONA 3's all new extensible architecture features a 4-Lane PCI-Express bus
interface with integrated AJA QuickTime™ drivers that work seamlessly with
the new Apple Power Mac G5s and Final Cut Pro™ providing unparalleled power
and workflow efficiency. Supporting any uncompressed SD or HD format,
including Dual Link, KONA 3 captures and plays back uncompressed 10-bit and
8-bit digital video and 24-bit 48kHz digital audio. KONA 3 also includes a
variety of 10-bit broadcast-quality features, such as hardware-based
up-and-down-conversion to and from HD-and adds a live hardware keyer for
compositing bugs, live clips, and other elements over video.
Another first for any QuickTime capture card, KONA 3's Internal HD/SD Live
Hardware Keyer makes it easier than ever for video editors and broadcast
designers to achieve sophisticated keyed video effects. Now users can load
up a QuickTime clip with an alpha-channel, perhaps a flying logo-and then
place it over live video coming into the card-all in real time.
'KONA 3 furthers the AJA commitment of offering the highest quality,
production-proven, reliable solutions that bring professional digital video
to the desktop,' said John Abt, CEO of AJA Video Systems. 'Editors are
increasingly demanding more versatile and cost-effective solutions for
postproduction on Final Cut Pro and Power Mac G5s, and the KONA 3 is the
best new product to meet their needs.'

  • 10-bit HD/SD Video/Key Output
  • Internal HD/SD Live Hardware Keyer
  • 8-Channel 24-bit AES and Embedded Audio
  • AJA QuickTime Driver

Pricing and Availability
KONA 3 is priced at US $2990.00. KONA3's I/O connections are supported with
supplied breakout cables, AJA's K3-Box-a rackmountable IRU enclosure is
available as an option for US $299.00. KONA 3 will be available worldwide
as of January 30th, 2006 through AJA's network of worldwide channel sales
partners.
The Mac supports the external SATA's, but may not support the work you're trying to make them do.
AJA would certainly say though, that Fibre is better.. which it is big time. a LOT faster if setup right. Dropped frames are usually caused by one of these things:
1. the drives can't keep up.
2. there too much unrendered material you're trying to playback in real time.
3. You need to simply mix down your audio..
4. The drives are full.. they really slow down at 90% capacity, but actually start slowing down at about 70% capacity.
Post more about the fibre array.. what is it? How many drives are stripped in a RAID 0 config? Whose Fibre Host Adapter are you using.
Did you ask AJA about the slot configuration? The new towers have some tricky setups having to do with PCI slot speeds.. That probably has to be setup right too.
Also post the exact versions of FCP, OS, and QuickTime you're running. I assume you are running all the latest, and running the latest drivers for the Kona 3, right?
